Between Spring and Stress: When Nature Makes You Sick
For many, early summer is considered the most beautiful time of the year. But while everything is in bloom and people are drawn outdoors, a particularly difficult period begins for millions of people with allergies. Pollen allergies, better known as hay fever, cause massive disruptions to daily life. The documentary powerfully illustrates how differently allergies can affect people. It focuses on personal stories from those affected who are living with the challenges of the condition. A tax consultant recounts a long ordeal and new treatment approaches that are offering hope for the first time. A farmer had to completely overhaul his business due to allergies. A young woman with a food allergy avoids social situations like dining out for fear of allergic reactions.
A Scientific Investigation with Lena Ganschow
The film is narrated by the science journalist and biologist Lena Ganschow. She embarks on an investigative journey to explore why allergies are on the rise worldwide. Along the way, she meets with leading experts in the field:
- Prof. Dr. Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann from the University of Augsburg and Helmholtz Zentrum München examines the effects of climate change on pollen and environmental factors
- Prof. Dr. Torsten Zuberbier from the Charité Berlin is researching the interaction between the gut microbiome, diet, and allergies
The documentary examines how modern lifestyles, environmental changes, and climate trends influence the onset and severity of allergic diseases.
