At the end of 2018, great news went around the world: the number of free-ranging mountain gorillas has risen to more than 1000! A rare success story in the protection of endangered species. The In One Media Production Gorillas under stress from Susanne Maria Krauß shows how the rare great apes live in the wild and what problems the increasingly scarce habitat brings with it.

The last mountain gorillas on earth live in only two habitats in eastern Africa. One is on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the other is in the Bwindi Forest in Uganda. Two small, green islands - surrounded by areas with one of the highest population densities in Africa. The animals cannot migrate. So what happens if the number of mountain gorillas grows but their habitat does not?

Scientists have found that gorilla groups now encounter each other much more frequently than in the past. And such encounters always end in aggressive and also deadly fights. Recent research results show: the animals' stress levels are increasing measurably.

How many mountain gorillas will there be? And what if that increases the stress? How strongly do conservationists and experts intervene? And what risks could become a threat to the gentle black giants in the future?

This impressive film takes the viewer into the breathtaking nature of the world's last wild mountain gorillas and explores exciting questions about species protection and the coexistence of humans and animals.
