The President's Tailor
The long journey of Maxmilian Grünfeld
D 2018
Martin Greenfield, birth name Maxmilian Grünfeld, comes from Czechoslovakia and was a prisoner in Auschwitz as a child during National Socialism. There he lost his parents and close relatives, but not his courage and will to live. He survived the Holocaust and travelled to America, where he became one of the best tailors in the world. He specialises in men's suits and tailors them for international politicians and stars. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first American president whom he dressed after he had met him as US general in April 1945 in the liberated concentration camp in Buchenwald. Greenfield lives and works in Brooklyn, where we visited him and he told us his life story. In addition, our camera team went with his son Jay on the traces of his history in Eastern Europe.
